Plans to extend the length of song samples available for iTunes customers to listen to for free from 30 seconds to a minute and a half may have to be shelved after music publishing representatives seemingly blocked this week’s expected early roll, it has emerged.
According to industry insiders, Apple had planned to lengthen the listen-free sample portions of songs on sale through iTunes by twice as much again – meaning that users would be able to hear around half of all average three minute length chart hits.
Online music industry experts had expected Apple to announce the change at a media launch in San Francisco this week.
But now it seems the media giant has been approached by the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) who have informed them that licensing will need to be in place before the listening length for song samples can be changed.
